BONUS STORY MARCH 03: MBAS TRAINING TUNES

TUNES TO TRAIN

Are you stuck on a stationary trainer in the basement? Jimmy Mac, Editor of Mountain Bike Action has put together a list with his top songs for training. These are the songs that you should burn to your Training Mix CD.

1. It Coulda Been me by Social Distortion. Mike Ness’ snarling voice and Social Ds driving punk are hard to beat. They will get your heart rate from a resting pace to a redline. From the album Social Distortion.

2. Flat Duo Jets Anthology by The Flat Duo Jets
This one will bring your heart rate back into the training zone. The South Carolina duo are no more together. Good luck finding this CD. It’s worth the effort. Taken from the album Go Go Harlem Baby.

3. Joe Jackson: Go for it
This song is taken from his Body and Soul album. Go For It has a great beat and the lyrics encourage you keep pushing.

4. Flaming Lips: Race for the Prize
These guys are just so bizarre that you have to love them. You can’t help but be amazed at the drummer’s abilities and distracted by his lyrics if you don’t pay attention. This video shows a marathon runner running along a road while scientists analyze his performance. This is why I consider this a training song. The Soft Bulletin is their album.

5. Five Gears in Reverse by E. Costello
There have been times when you feel like everything is in reverse. This is why I chose this one. Get Happy!

6. Oingo Bongo: Sweat
This little tune is perfect for you if you are sweating a lot. This song is also available live on Oingo Boingo Live.

7. Supergrass: Alright
The American men have not taken to these British men and it is too bad. This video features them riding on some Sting Rays bikes. Taken from their album I Should Coco.

8. Train in Vain by The Clash
This track is not on the London Calling album. It is only available on vinyl, so it might not have been listed on the CD. You aren’t training in vain, so keep spinning.

9. Sister Havana from Urge Overkill
I’m pretty certain that they have never rode mountain bikes. But this song will inspire you to ride faster.

10. Matthew Sweet, Sick of Me
Pop music with a punch! You can listen to the beat and then pound away! Enjoy 100% Fun

11. Morning Glory by Oasis
Although it’s not cool to be like these guys, at this point it’s easy to relax a little. This song will get you back on track. From (Whats The Stories) Morning Glory.

12. Were in desperate need of X
To make you mad, some L.A. punk is added to the mix. Wild Gift.

13. Hey Jealousy from the Gin Blossoms
This song is perfect to spin to. From The New Miserable Experiment.

14. It smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
Are you allowed to comment? This is the best rock song in ten years. It will motivate you late into your workout. The album Nevermind.

15. Kill That Guy with the Von Zippers
The hype surrounding The Vines or The Hives is well-deserved. But the Von Zippers did it better five years back. This sloppy, straigh-out-of-the-garage rock will keep you pushing. Bad Generation.

16. Guitar Wolf – Teenage UFO
Three Japanese men who don’t speak English produce ugly, distortion-soaked rock. If you dont like it, dont worry. These songs don’t last more than a few seconds. Jet Generation.

17. Trippin Daisy blows away
I can’t think of anything better by these guys than Blown Away. You are nearing the end of your workout, and you need an extra kick to keep moving.

18. Good Time Boys from The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Anthony Keidis, the lead singer, was there looking at mountain bikes a few years ago so who knows? From the Mothers Milk release.

19. The Vines – Outtathaway
The Vines will take you to your limits. From Highly Evolved.

20. Buddy Holly – True Love Ways
This is your cool down tune. This song is from The Original Master Tapes.
