I’ve wondered for a while if I should buy a new bike.
It’s true, even though I have been running an urban cycling blog for almost eight years (! I have only owned two bikes in that time period, and both were very inexpensive Decathlons.
The BTwin Riverside 100 was my first adult bike. It cost me around 129 when it was purchased in Spain in 2012. Why did I choose that particular bike? Well, because I was just over a year out of university and was still broke after buying a car for my first proper sit-in-an-office-until-half-five job.

Adult Bike #1: BTwin Riverside100
I had not moved to Gibraltar long ago for work. I was also planning to commute daily from Spain across the border. It is a pain to cross the Gibraltar border in a car. After driving through rush hour the previous year and having to deal with the ever-increasing costs of owning a car, I decided that I didn’t want one. I also wanted to experience the many benefits of riding a bicycle.
I went to Decathlon, and I bought the cheapest bike that I could find.
The Riverside 100 is a basic bike. It’s a basic hybrid bike. Its nimbleness was what impressed me the most.
Fast, light and cheap
My Riverside 100 was my noble stead for the next two decades. It didn’t feel particularly nippy for a while, however.
One day I asked my roommate, « What do you put on your bike chain when you get back from work? »

Mon Riverside est resté avec moi jusqu’à ce que je quitte Gibraltar/Espagne. Après cela, un autre ami a repris mon vélo. Cela n’a pas attiré mon attention à la fin.

J’ai quitté l’Espagne et j’ai déménagé en Allemagne. La première année, j’ai emprunté des vélos à mes amis.
Après avoir déménagé à Berlin, je savais que je voulais acheter mon deuxième vélo pour adulte.
Après n’avoir pas eu à conduire de voiture au cours des trois dernières années, j’avais envie de dépenser beaucoup d’argent.
Decathlon était ma deuxième étape, cette fois je suis allé tirer pour la suspension avant et j’ai intégré des lampes à dynamo sur mon vélo hybride BTwin Hoprider 500. Ça m’a coûté 349. Ce n’était pas énorme, mais c’était beaucoup après mon Riverside.
C’était il y a presque quatre ans, et je suis retourné en Espagne pendant cette période. Le Hoprider, cependant, est mon acolyte de confiance.
La machine
Les Avantages D’un Vélo Hybride
Lorsque j’ai acheté mon deuxième vélo, j’y ai beaucoup réfléchi et fait des recherches. Avant tout, je voulais un vélo que je pourrais emporter n’importe où et n’importe quand.
La suspension avant était un atout important pour moi. Je ne voulais pas ressentir les vibrations d’une mauvaise surface de route ou m’inquiéter de claquer dans un nid-de-poule inattendu.
Mon Riverside avait aussi un problème de crevaisons fréquentes. Cela était probablement dû au fait que les roues avant avaient été volées et que les pneus s’étaient détériorés. J’ai décidé d’obtenir un pneu plus solide qui offrirait plus de résistance.
La magie de la lumière dynamo intégrée (c’est-à-dire des lumières qui s’allument automatiquement lorsque vous pédalez. Je ne voulais pas avoir besoin de les garder chargées et de transporter un tas de lumières.
Le porte-bagages à l’arrière était la cerise sur le gâteau. Bien que je ne transporte pas beaucoup de courses ou d’autres articles, je trouve le porte-bagages très utile pour transporter mon Hiplok sur la route.

Vélos Hybrides : Les Inconvénients
Il y a cependant un inconvénient aux vélos hybrides : ils sont plus lourds.
Mon vélo Hoprider 500 pèse 16 kg (ou 2 et 1/2 pierre). Deux problèmes potentiels peuvent en découler : 1) il n’est pas très rapide 2) il est lourd à transporter.
Fortunately, I don’t live in an apartment anymore. I no longer have to haul my bike up several flights of stairs each day because there was not enough bike storage. For me, weight is not an issue.
Speed is a concern. It would be wonderful if my ride were lighter and more efficient. It doesn’t really bother me, though, Even though I’m not as nimble on roads, it is something that I prefer to be able to ride on trails and other similar terrains.
Bicycle Mistakes I’ve Made
Although I’ve learned a lot about basic maintenance since my Riverside 100, there are still some critical mistakes that can permanently damage a bike.
Every few weeks, I wash my bike with a sprayer. Once it is clean, I apply a degreaser/lube to the chain (I don’t lol so much at this).

My biggest mistake in caring for my bike was to leave it outside too often.
My bike was always locked in the courtyard of buildings when I lived in Berlin. It was exposed to the elements for months without protection. Since I was in Spain, I leave it outside. Rain is not an issue, but strong winds can cause sand to coat my bike, and get stuck in the chain.
A good waterproof cover is something I recommend to anyone who has a new bike but doesn’t have the space to store it indoors. This will extend the bike’s life span and make it much more enjoyable to ride.
